In the time since Pokémon Sun and Moon has been released, fans have already managed to mod Super Smash Bros. for Wii U to include Lillie and Cosmog.
Lillie and Cosmog, with the latter known as Nebby, are integral characters in Pokémon Sun and Moon and are a big part of the game’s storyline. With that in mind, it seems the modders held back on releasing this patch to avoid spoilers.
The mod itself replaces Rosalina and Luma from the Super Mario Galaxy games and uses the assets from Pokémon Sun and Moon for Lillie and Cosmog instead.
The results are really quite impressive, as the Pokémon Sun and Moon assets have been upscaled for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
What’s interesting about this is how good the Sun and Moon assets already look, which ties into the rumors of a Sun and Moon update for the Nintendo Switch codenamed Pokémon Stars.
While Pokémon Stars is still a rumor, from what we have heard thus far it seems that Stars has been in development alongside Sun and Moon, sharing art assets in the process.
This is a standard approach for most cross-platform games and helps with saving costs while also ensuring visual parity across a variety of systems.
The fact that these 3DS assets look this solid already gives partial credence to the rumor that they originated at a higher definition for another more powerful platform like the Nintendo Switch.
Either way, these kinds of mods for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U are always great to see and I am happy that gamers have taken to both Lillie and Cosmog since the release of Sun and Moon.
