The Captain America: Civil War Dossiers - Iron Man and Vision

When the idea of an intrusive government rears its ugly head, Tony Stark is usually the last person that you’d expect to see support the idea of a controlled superhuman force. But over the course of five movies, the playboy shellhead has been through a lot of damage, coming out of the biggest battles and witnessing first-hand the devastation that people of mass destruction are capable of.

And that’s a path that sets Iron Man up against the first Avenger himself, as he assembles a team to take down Captain America and his rogue superhuman squad. Iron Man is going to need a lot of firepower in Captain America: Civil War. Something that the armoured Avenger never seems to be in short supply of. Here’s part two of our Civil War feature, focusing on the tag team of Iron Man and the Vision.

Anthony Edward Stark may refer to himself as a billionaire playboy philanthropist, but to the rest of the world he is the armoured Avenger known as Iron Man. After a life-changing event that saw him kidnapped and left on the verge of death, Tony Stark survived ordeal and vowed to use his technology to help mankind. Not exploit us with weapons of mass destruction that help line his pockets, as Stark’s road to redemption would instead rely on a cutting-edge full-boy prosthesis.

Tony Stark’s greatest ability will always be his formidable intellect. Gifted from a young age, Stark graduated from MIT at the age of seventeen and then went on to become known as one of the smartest men alive today. From a young age, Stark showed exceptional engineering and mechanical understanding, eventually using these skills later on his life to help create his first Iron man armour in  under a month, while held hostage in a cave.

His intellect also helped design and build the arc reactor that powers his suits, create an arsenal of weapons from tools bought at a home depot store and hack advanced networks, such as the US Pentagon firewall when he was still in high school. Stark also proved to be a savvy businessman, steering his father’s company to new heights after he died and turning it into the premier arms supplier for the US military.

Stark’s creative thinking has proven to come in handy when on the battlefield, while training with his bodyguard Happy Hogan and SHIELD agent Phil Coulson has given him enough hand to hand combat experience to hold his own against trained soldiers and bodyguards.

It may be the man that makes the suit, but the Iron Man armour is still impressive even without a Stark inside of it. After numerous adventures and experiences, Stark created an entire arsenal of armour suits, prosthetic devices which could meet any one particular scenario. Stark usually always keeps a jack-of-all-trades suit in a state of constant upgrade however, having gone through dozens of iterations over the years.

While no two armours are the same, they do all share certain default features such as flight capability, superhuman strength, enhanced reflexes, durability, lasers, mini-rockets, repulsor blasts and the Uni-beam chest attack. Tony Stark is a walking arsenal, whenever encased within one of his trademark armours. Stronger, faster and augmented by an on-board AI system such as J.A.R.V.I.S or F.R.I.D.A.Y, Stark’s armour is made up of a strong light-weight Titanium alloy that has interlocked plates for the shell, and a chest plate that protects the arc reactor.

After years spent fighting massive threats both personal and global, it looks like Stark may be putting his armour away for good. Unless a certain ideological divide draws him back into the fight.

Whenever Tony Stark flew into battle, he could always count on his advanced artificial intelligence system JARVIS to watch his back for him. An evolving artificial neural network, JARVIS was thought lost when Ultron went rogue. Instead, JARVIS was reincarnated inside the Vibranium-laced body of Vision, repurposed as a defender of humanity who helped stop the Ultron offensive that almost wiped out mankind.

As a synthetic being, Vision is more than man or android. His synthetic body is durable enough to withstand the mightiest of blows, thanks to it being lined with the vibration-absorbing miracle metal known as Vibranium, while also being somewhat a close simulcram to a human body as he has organic tissue threaded throughout it.

Vision (1)

That on its own would be fantastic, but its the addition of the Infinity Gem known as the Mind Stone which actually powers Vision. With that Infinity Gem, Vision can increase and decrease his density at will, making himself light enough to levitate or heavy enough to smash through enemies with ease. Taking it a step further, Vision can also become intangible, phasing through objects with ease and destroying them in the process if he so chooses to do so.

Vision (7)

Vision is also superhumanly strong, having eliminated dozens of Ultron drones with his bare hands and even giving Ultron Prime a run for his money. The Mind Stone also gives Vision the ability to fire energy beams from his forehead, an attack so powerful that it even affected Ultron Prime’s Vibranium body.

Vision’s greatest strength isn’t from the Mind Stone however. It’s from his innate nobility and desire to not destroy, a trait that even Thor’s hammer Mjolnir recognised and judged him worthy enough to be allowed to wield the mighty weapon in battle.
