Onto Bigger and Better Things
Polish developers CD Projekt Red have spoken out about their ambitious new project Cyberpunk 2077, crediting the worldwide success and critical acclaim of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for granting them the opportunity and resources to make something even bigger and better than the 2015 hit.
The Witcher 3 was named Game of the Year over 250 times and this impressive feat has encouraged the developers to set their future aspirations high, setting their sights on being among the top game developers in the world. Additionally, the team have seen their company grow from a team of 80 people on the first Witcher title to over 250 on Witcher 3 but CEO Marcin Iwinski emphatically states that they have no intentions on becoming a "10 project studio."
Cyberpunk 2077 will place players in a 'dark future' where advanced technology has become the salvation and curse of humanity. Boasting a non-linear storyline, the game is set in the dystopian metropolis of Night City, an open world environment with sandbox elements inspired by the 'Rockstar Games model.'
For us, it's never about money. Yes, we deliver results, but we always explain to our investors that we have a long-term perspective. They shouldn't expect us to annualise, or suddenly start releasing games just because there's a business opportunity. Fundamentally, The Witcher 3 has proven that... and right now, we have a lot of credit, so we should use that and take the time to make Cyberpunk something really meaningful for the whole industry. It has to reach the next quality bar, and I'm not talking just for us, but for the market.
If we look at our role models, what Rockstar is doing is amazing. It's not like, 'We have to ship a game or we may not hit our financial goals.' It's, 'Here's GTA V, and by the way, it's the best game ever made.' We're all looking forward to Red Dead Redemption 2, because you know they'll show something and you'll be like, 'Oh my god.'
But we still have to get there. We have to prove it. The Witcher 3 is a good example, but we have to keep on delivering.
Cyberpunk 2077 is expected to arrive on Xbox One some time in the future, but its a way off yet.
