After a surprise Oscar nomination for her original song from the Racing Extinction soundtrack—just the second-ever nomination for a transgender person, though she was inexplicably denied an opportunity to perform during the ceremony—the lead singer of Antony and the Johnsons has moved on to her first solo album as ANOHNI. Hopelessness was produced by the artist along with Oneohtrix Point Never and Hudson Mohawke.
The Brooklyn-based experimental artist's third album follows her 2013 effort Nepenthe. Recorded in multiple cities, the self-produced set includes contributions from Mas Ysa.
The Colour in Anything
A surprise digital release last Friday, James Blake's long-delayed third album (originally expected to be titled Radio Silence) features 17 tracks, including a pair of collaborations with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon (though not the long-rumored collaboration with Kanye West). A bit of the production and writing duties were handled by Rick Rubin and Frank Ocean.
Not even a breakup has stopped the progress of Death Grips, who have continued to record and tour since announcing their disbanding in 2014. Their latest album (out digitally now, with a physical release to follow on July 29) includes the previously released track "Hot Head." A collection of the instrumental and vocal tracks from the album is also available from the band as a free download.
A Moon Shaped Pool
Radiohead's less electronic, more symphonic (and guitar-oriented) 9th album is yet another surprise release, arriving yesterday after an announcement on Friday, and preceded by a pair of music videos (both streaming below). It's the band's first album since 2011's The King of Limbs, and it includes a new version of two-decade-old live staple "True Love Waits," which had never before appeared on a Radiohead studio album. (In fact, the majority of the 11 tracks here have been in Radiohead's live sets in the past.) A Moon Shaped Pool is only available digitally at the moment, with a physical release due on June 17th and a special edition vinyl/CD release (with 2 extra tracks and a book) to follow in September.
