Nintendo NX to launch worldwide March 2017 -

Nintendo's next-generation console, codenamed NX, will release globally in March 2017, the company has confirmed.

Nintendo describes the console as a "gaming platform" with a "brand new concept". It has previously been rumoured to feature two units: a core, home console base, and a mobile handheld attachment.

The console won't be at this June's E3, however, with Nintendo instead choosing to focus on the Wii U version of The Legend of Zelda. Nintendo says that the NX will be "unveiled later this year".

"Nintendo previously announced that it would release more information about its next system, code-named NX, this year," Nintendo said earlier today. "As the first announcement of any NX information, Nintendo confirmed that NX is scheduled to launch in March 2017. NX will not make an appearance at the upcoming E3 video game trade show in Los Angeles in June and will be unveiled later this year."

The 2017 date comes as a surprise to some who had previously expected the console to launch later this year. Microsoft and Sony are also rumoured to be working on new consoles, potentially launching as early as this year.
