Titanfall 2 leak teases larger maps, new gameplay

Gameplay details and alleged concept art for upcoming shooter Titanfall 2 appear to have leaked ahead of the game's formal reveal.

Artwork and gameplay mechanics appeared on Reddit. The anonymous poster cites "inside sources" claiming that the game will have larger maps than the first Titanfall, and bring grappling hooks into players' arsenals. These are said to have multiple uses, including "getting into your Titan, aiding free-running, or tactical plays such as pulling enemies while they're midair."

If real, the supposed concept art supports this, showing the human pilot wall-running - possibly thanks to an advanced exoskeleton. The Titan robot touching the wall in the same fashion could hint at more mobile mecha in the game, too.

Redditors also claimed that publisher Electronic Arts will release the game in October 2016. EA already has Battlefield 1 set for launch that month, and while no official launch date for Titanfall 2 has been announced, the publisher has already said it doesn't fear the two similar games - both first-person shooters, although in very different genres - will undermine each other if released closely.

EA's CEO Andrew Wilson said in an earnings call that "There is a very broad and diverse set of players who play games in that category who are looking to fulfil different game play motivations," adding "we feel like we actually have a really strong position to deliver the broadest set of gameplay mechanics as it relates to first-person shooter genre across the two titles, and feel very confident that we are well-positioned to do very well in that category."

Officially, all we know is that Titanfall 2 will once again split battles between human-sized ground assaults and piloting giant robots. California-based developer Respawn Entertainment - founded in 2010 by former Call of Duty developers Vince Zampella and Jason West - announced the sequel was in development in March 2015 but have largely been silent on the issue since. A worldwide reveal for the game is planned for 12 June, two days prior to E3 2016.

The original Titanfall was released in March 2014, and while it was praised for its excellent multiplayer battles, it drew as much criticism for lacking any real story mode or single player options - even the campaign had to be played in groups. Respawn has said that the sequel will have a proper story and solo campaign.

One bit of information on Titanfall 2 that has been legitimately revealed is the teaser trailer. While lacking any gameplay footage, the narration points to a darker, more cynical direction for the story, and hints at one change - the mechs appear to wield giant swords now, all the better for living out your anime giant robot fantasies. Titanfall 2 is also confirmed to be headed to PlayStation 4, whereas the first game was exclusive to Xbox and PC.

WIRED has contacted Electronic Arts for comment on the alleged leaks, and will update this story accordingly.
