Despite all the teases from Hugh Jackman himself, or how much fans have been begging for it, there’s just no way that Fox can adapt the “Old Man Logan” story arc for Wolverine 3. At least not the way it exists in the comics – there are just too many integral characters and plot points which Fox is contractually not allowed to touch. What they can do is maybe just lift certain elements from Mark Millar’s story to use in theirs. And it looks like they’re doing just that when it comes to Wolverine’s appearance.
Director James Mangold is currently busy shooting Wolverine 3 in New Orleans, and some first set pics of the production have popped up online thanks to Just Jared. On first glance, they’re not terribly exciting, just showing Jackman in a black suit. But look closer and you’ll see that Jackman’s Logan is now sporting a full beard instead of his trademark mutton chops, and a far less unruly hairstyle than past outings. Full beard and hair similar to what the character had in the Old Man Logan story.
There have been lots of rumours surrounding the story of Wolverine 3 – like the fact that the Reavers and Donald Pierce may be the baddies, and that Wolvie clone X-23 will feature – but the only officially confirmed fact we know is that the movie will be set in the future and have a western feel. That certainly fueled the Old Man Logan adaptation theories, seeing as that is essentially a future set post-apocalyptic tale set with Wolverine almost playing the part of a retired gunslinger.
However, there doesn’t appear to be a damn thing post-apocalyptic about the rest of those pics (though Jackman does seem awfully dishevelled), which just confirms my suspicion that while this will be the chronologically “last” Wolverine story, that’s probably where the similarities with Old Man Logan ends. So no, don’t expect Wolverine to be fighting a T-rex infected with the Venom symbiote, or going toe-to-toe with a whole family of inbred hillbilly Hulks. Which is definitely a shame.
The still untitled R-rated Wolverine 3 also stars Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez. It is scheduled for release on 3 March 2017.
