Nintendo to release first anime movie by 2021 -

Nintendo is seriously entering the movie business with plans to release its first anime movie within the next five years, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima revealed in an interview with Asahi Shinbun.

Kimishima said the platform holder is keen on "anime-type content where Nintendo should produce as much by itself as possible."

The failure of 1993 live action movie Super Mario Bros. was cited as a reason for Nintendo to steer clear of future adventures in live action.

The first film "won't be ready this year but also won't take 5 years," said Kimishima. The firm hasn't yet said which Nintendo franchises will be utilised in the anime projects.

Nintendo recently used anime series Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins, produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, Production I.G and WIT STUDIO, to help promote the Wii U action game. It also worked with the same team on three-part Kid Icarus series Thanatos Rising, and in creating the cutscenes for Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.
