Pacific Rim didn't light up the box office, and as such a sequel has been blowing hot and cold, but it finally appears that things are progressing.
Legendary Pictures has announced Pacific Rim 2 will be headlined by Star Wars: The Force Awakens' star John Boyega, with Spartacus TV series' Steven S. DeKnight to direct.
Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba's character from the original film.
"I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. 'The World saving the world' was our goal and I couldn't think of a better man for the job," commented Pacific Rim creator Guillermo del Toro.
The film is targeting a 4th Quarter start date and is described by Legendary as a "key project" on its upcoming slate.
The official press release doesn't title the film, though del Toro has referred to it as Pacific Rim 2 on social media.
